ZAGREB, Nov 9 (Hina) - About 100 workers of the "Zagrepcanka
trgovina" company at 10AM Thursday morning blocked traffic in
Heinzel Street downtown Zagreb for about 20 minutes.
The workers are protesting because they have not yet received their
salaries for September and October before the beginning of
bankruptcy proceedings scheduled for late November.
The workers are also protesting because the government failed to
establish a programme of care for the workers after the bankruptcy
proceedings.
Today's protest is only a warning to the government that workers
have neither patience nor the strength to wait for their rights to
be respected, the head of Zagreb's branch of Croatia's Association
of Trade Unions (HUS), Mario Ivekovic, said.
Should the government fail to pass a concrete programme of
reorganisation and workers care, Ivekovic said the HUS would call
upon all dissatisfied workers to join a protest on November 24,
during the Zagreb Summit, outside of Zagreb's hotel
Intercontinental.
The workers said they would meet at 9AM every day in Heinzel Street
and continue with union protests.
