ZAGREB, June 21 (Hina) - An association of Croatian Homeland war
veterans-volunteers (UHBDDR) maintains that it is more necessary
to make a review of the status of war veterans - defenders, which was
granted to some people who had not at all been included in the war,
rather than revising disability of Homeland War disabled invalids,
said the UHBDDR leader, Branko Borkovic - 'Mladi Jastreb', at a news
conference on Wednesday.
Borkovic told reporters that this association had pressed charges
against former defence and interior ministers for issuing
confirmations about the war veteran's status to some persons,
without complying to the law.
According to him, new authorities have not done anything to solve
this problem, although UHBDDR warned that there were people who got
the status of veterans but had not fought in the war.
Borkovic added that he had a data that some 680,000 certificates had
been issues on the war veteran's status.
Commenting on the work of the commission for the revision of
disability of war veterans, UHBDDR leader assessed it was working
"in a fog", as nobody knows who is in the commission and according to
which laws it is operating.
The status of the military disabled person can be established by a
relevant commission of doctors and the status cannot be granted
through administrative decisions, Borkovic maintained.
He called on war veterans volunteers to support democratic forces
in Croatia as, according to him, he sees in a ruling party - SDP
(Social Democratic Party) - a struggle between rigid leftists and
democrats.
