SPLIT QUAY NAMED FRANJO TUDJMAN SQUARE

SPLIT QUAY NAMED FRANJO TUDJMAN SQUARE SPLIT, June 12 (Hina) - The western side of the Split quay was named Franjo Tudjman Square on Monday, in line with a decision by the Split City Council. The chairman of the commission for naming streets and squares, Andrija Dujic, recalled naming the quay Franjo Tudjman Square was a proposal by the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), which the commission unanimously supported. By supporting the proposal that one of the city squares be named after Pope John Paul II on a previous occasion, the commission had already annulled its principle that it would not name streets and squares after persons who died less than 10 years ago. Therefore, there is no reason why the new square should not be named after Franjo Tudjman, Dujic said. Stanko Jelaca of the Pensioners' Party (SU), who abstained, said one should wait at least three years before naming a square after Tudjman, whereas Nikola Simunovic of the Action of Social Democrats of Croatia
