LUXEMBOURG, June 13 (Hina) - The European Union Council of Ministers on Tuesday afternoon adopted a proposal by the European Commission on opening talks with Croatia with the aim of concluding an agreement on stabilisation and
association. The Council also requested the European Commission to prepare draft directives for the talks, said Portugal's Foreign Minister Jaime Gama, who is chairing the Council. Chris Patten, EC's member in charge of foreign relations, said this was an important event in relations between the EU and Croatia. Patten said the EC would prepare the draft directives for negotiations before the end of July, so that talks could start in autumn as soon as possible.
