MINE-CLEARING DEVICE REPLACING 500 EXPERTS TESTED IN ZADAR

ZADAR ZADAR, June 7 (Hina) - A Swedish mine-clearing device, the Mine Guzler, donated by Sweden's government, was tested on Wednesday in the fields of Bastice in the hinterland of Zadar, a port on the central Adriatic coast. The device weights 47 tonnes and is easy and safe to manage either from cabin or another vehicle, said Allan Carlsson, the director of the manufacturer, Swedish company Boffors. The Mine Guzler, which costs US$1.5 million, will demine the first 1,000 square metres for free. Usage in the future will be commercialised, meaning that 0.2 US dollars will be charged for demining one square metre of ground. It is believed the device in one year can clear of mines an area which would take 500 mine-removal experts about two and a half years. According to estimates, there are about 4,000 mines in the Bastice area which have yet to be removed.(hina) ha jn
