VINKOVCI, May 5 (Hina) - "Croatia is today in a very favourable
position regarding the process of its drawing closer to the
European Union. We can, without doubt, in June expect a positive
assessment of the feasibility study on an agreement on
stabilisation and association, that is, on the start of talks on
that agreement," European Integration Minister Ivan Jakovcic said
in Vinkovci on Friday.
Jakovcic, who today paid a visit to Vukovar-Srijem County, said
Croatia and the EU should sign the agreement on stabilisation and
association in the first half of next year at the latest, whereas it
could become a full EU member after long and difficult
negotiations.
Jakovcic met Vukovar County Prefect Rudolf Koenig and held a speech
on EU-Croatia relations at the county hall in Vinkovci.
After meeting Koenig, Jakovcic said he was satisfied that Vukovar-
Srijem County was the first county where he could present his idea
on forming county councils for European integration. These
councils should be formed in all counties in the next month or two.
Residents in all counties would in that way be able to follow the
process of Croatia's drawing closer to its membership in the EU,
Jakovcic said.
Speaking about the reconstruction of Vukovar County, especially
the town of Vukovar, Jakovcic said special regulations should be
adopted for Vukovar because it would not be possible to reconstruct
the city without them.
Prefect Koenig said his county had offered 25 projects for foreign
investments through the European Integration Ministry and
expressed hope that at least some of those projects of small- and
medium-sized entrepreneurship "would be given the green light for
the arrival of foreign capital in Croatia."
