ZAGREB, March 16 (Hina) - Croatian informaticians on Thursday forwarded a letter to Croatia's President Stjepan Mesic and Premier Ivica Racan warning them that the country is lagging behind in information science and technology and
proposing concrete solutions for Croatia to catch up with countries in the vanguard in the development of this science. The informaticians' society (HIZ) managing board accentuated that there would be no progress without information science and technology adding that in the private sector in Croatia there are over 1,000 firms capable of applying quickly new technologies in the practice. Ivica Racan warning them that the country is lagging behind in
information science and technology and proposing concrete
solutions for Croatia to catch up with countries in the vanguard in
the development of this science.
The informaticians' society (HIZ) managing board accentuated that
there would be no progress without information science and
technology adding that in the private sector in Croatia there are
over 1,000 firms capable of applying quickly new technologies in
the practice.
Former authorities were not sensitive for possibilities of better
applications of information technology, informaticians
complained and added that judging from the current documents such
as the Government's programme for 2000-2004, new authorities have
not also showed positive attitude towards up-to-date processes in
this technology.
Therefore, informaticians and similar experts maintain it is
necessary that they launch an initiative and offer cooperation to
the Croatian Government.
According to them there are three key issues - to follow Croatia's
bids to enter the European Union, to stimulate the state
authorities and administration help solve problems in Croatian
information science and technology and enable information science
and technology to become a strategic prime-mover of the
development.
In the letter, the informaticians' society proposed ten measures
including the suggestion about the appointment of a minister in
charge of the strategic development and information science.
