ZAGREB, Mar 7 (Hina) - The president of the international Open Society Foundation, George Soros, described his two-day visit to Zagreb as very positive, expressing satisfaction with the operation of the Open Society-Croatia. #L# Soros believes the Open Society-Croatia will continue helping Croatia on its path to an open society, and emphasises the Foundation's work in Croatia will continue however with a slightly changed programme. Assistance to the media will be reduced because conditions have been created for equal market competition as well as for a constructive cooperation in some other areas, such as education, Soros said. According to him, the Foundation is not able to contribute more significantly in the implementation of economic reforms in Croatia. An exception could be small-scale businesses, Soros said, adding, however, that the tax system as well as some other regulative regimes and forms of financing would have to be changed. Only then would the Foundation be able to contribute more to the development of small-scale businesses, which Soros believes are the future of the Croatian economy. Building an open society depends largely on the success or failure of the Stability Pact for South-East Europe, Soros said, adding this was why the success of the Pact was currently his priority.
