ZAGREB, March 15 (Hina) - Mirko Galic will be appointed new director
of Croatian Radio-Television (HRT), the six parties of the ruling
coalition agreed on Wednesday.#L#
"Based on Mirko Galic's professional and public activity in the
past, we believe he is the candidate guaranteeing the
transformation of the HRT from a state into a public television,"
says an explanation the coalition forwarded to parliament's
Committee on Elections, Appointments and Administrative Matters.
The Committee today unanimously and without discussion accepted
the proposal and simultaneously relieved of duty Ivica Vrkic, who
was suggested in the former parliament by the Croatian Democratic
Union.
Galic's appointment as HRT's new director will be decided by
Parliament's House of Representatives.
Until now, Galic was editor-in-chief of "Globus" weekly. For a time
before the change of authorities, he was one of Vrkic's assistants
on the HRT.
Seven days after parliamentary elections, on January 10, Vrkic
entrusted the new parliament with his mandate as director and
chairman of the board at the HRT.
The ruling coalition suggested that he be relieved of duty "due to
the known situation on the HRT, which caused great dissatisfaction
in the overall social community, and primarily because the
transformation of the HRT into a public television had not been
ensured."
