ZAGREB/SPLIT, Jan 1 (Hina) - Many Zagreb citizens greeted this New Year in the city's central square - Square of Ban Jelacic. People packed in the square and nearby streets where popular artists and singers performed programmes on
occasion of the coming of a new century. Exactly at midnight, fireworks were set off while another big fireworks cascade was rolling down the High-Rise Building ("Neboder") near the square. This programme was organised by city authorities. The second biggest Croatian city, Split, also prepared celebrations in the open. Many cafes and restaurants were open all the night. A great number of Split residents decided to welcome 2000 in streets. Thousands of citizens of other Croatian towns also partied together in squares and streets. Fireworks displays and musical programmes marked the turn of the century.(hina) ms
