ZAGREB, Dec 23 (Hina) - Croatian parliament president and acting
head of state Vlatko Pavletic on Thursday wished a merry Christmas
and happy New Year to all Croatian citizens at home and to Croats
abroad.#L#
"We are leaving behind us the year in which the creator of the modern
Croatian state and its first President, Franjo Tudjman, passed
away," Pavletic said at the beginning of his message.
"We are leaving behinds us the year in which we did not achieve
everything we rightfully expected to, because our economy, and our
tourism in particular, was again forestalled by war conflicts in
our neighbourhood," said Pavletic.
He added this showed that nowadays everything was connected to such
an extent "that any notions of self-sufficiency and isolationism
are no less dangerous than a blind headlong dashing towards
globalist projects with a too transparent political tendency."
Reminding of impending elections, Pavletic expressed hope they
will be "followed by even more intense activity aimed at the
achievement of attainable goals in the maintenance of stability and
the raising of the standard of all population strata."
"We are entering a year in which it is necessary to correctly value
and pay for each productive and creative work of public use, and to
find solutions for problems which oppress many countries,
especially those in transition, and these are low wages, the
irregular payment of salaries, unemployment and internal debts,
low productivity and insufficient preparedness for breaking with
export onto world markets," the message reads.
After reminding of priorities in other fields of work and living,
Pavletic stressed the tasks ahead were far from easy, but pointed
out they were "feasible on condition that we develop, much more than
in the past, the entrepreneurial spirit and tighten responsibility
in everything, in all activities, and in political decisions."
Pavletic expects Croatia will be "what also all good-intentioned
and influential international factors predict, a country of
prosperity and a high percentage development, as a model and
initiator, as evidence of what can be achieved by strengthening the
rule-of-law and the constant strengthening of democracy in all
known forms, to the benefit of each individual, each minority, as
well as of the people and state as a whole."
