On this occasion, Croatian Premier Zlatko Matesa and Interior
Minister Ivan Penic on Friday toured the plant and talked with AKD
workers about the entire procedure for the production of
passports.
Minister Penic asserted that new travel papers of Croatian citizens
will be protected according the up-to-date standards.
Croatian PM congratulated for the successful completion of a six-
month long project of preparations for issuing new passports, and
added that the next important project will be the printing of new
Croatian identity cards.
According to Penic, new travel papers are mechanically readable and
adjusted to European Union standards. The passport with soft blue
covers has 32 pages and is bound with a three-colour (red-white-
blue) protective thread.
Citizens do not have to change their passports with new ones as long
as their current travel papers are valid.
In 2000 some 300,000 passports of Croatian citizens expire and in
2001 about million passports will expire, according to data of the
Interior Ministry.
