ZAGREB, Nov 24 (Hina) - Zlatko Klaric was elected the new president of the Action of Social-Democrats of Croatia (ASH), while former president Silvije Degen was elected president of the party's Central Committee at a party congress on
Saturday. Klaric, a former ASH secretary-general, is a 44-year-old professor of political science and owns two tourist companies. Asked why he did not run for the party presidency, Degen, who was at the party's helm for ten years, said that now that the idea of social democracy had won, the party needed a young, professional leadership. He said he would continue to actively contribute to the party and help it realise the idea of social democracy - the fight for the poor and workers and the democratic regionalisation of Croatia. The new ASH president said his first and most important task was enabling the party to enter parliament at the next elections.(hina) sb rml
