OSIJEK, Oct 9 (Hina) - Two Serb Croat genocide suspects from the eastern region of Baranja were released on Tuesday after the Osijek County State Prosecutor's Office dropped the charges due to lack of evidence. An indictment issued in
1997 charged Desimir Lancanin and Zeljko Lozanovic with the harassment and persecution of the non-Serb population of the village of Branjini during the Serb occupation of Baranja in the early 1990s, for the purpose of ethnic cleansing. The charges against them were dropped, in line with the Amnesty Law, after it was established that witness testimonies did not indict the accused but indicated they were guilty of armed rebellion against the Republic of Croatia. The Lancanin-Lozanovic trial began on Sept. 20 when their case was separated from that of another 23 Baranja Serb Croats accused of genocide.(hina) ha
