ZAGREB, Dec 19 (Hina) - The head of Croatia's Customs
Administration, Antun Uljar, on Thursday welcomed the decision of
the customs union not to go on a strike that was to start today and
last until December 27. #L#
Uljar described the decision against a strike during the holiday
season, when all border crossings see an increase in traffic, as not
only a gesture of good will, especially towards Croatians who work
abroad and come home for Christmas, but also as an expression of the
customs officers' high professionalism.
The Administration said negotiations on the customs union's
requests would resume right away and that it would do everything
within its financial possibilities to improve work for customs
officers.
The union has requested a 25 percent pay increase, a correction of
coefficients, an advanced pension plan, and the signing of a branch
collective agreement.
Uljar recalled customs work was very demanding as Croatia's customs
outlets, more than 150, represent a big cost for the state.
The Customs Administration employs 2,960 workers.
