ZAGREB, Dec 18 (Hina) - In reaction to the announcement of the
Croatian Customs' Union (CSH) that customs officers would go on
strike on December 19-27, the government said on Wednesday the
strike would be unlawful and unfounded. #L#
The Union announced the strike because the government refused its
demands for salary increases and other customs officers' rights.
The government believes there is no justified cause for the strike
because it entirely respects the signed collective agreement.
Therefore, in this case it cannot be claimed that there is a dispute
between the government and the CSH regarding compliance with the
collective agreement, a government's statement said.
In case of any collective labour dispute, the CSH would be obliged
to request that a conciliation process be instigated, in keeping
with Labour Act regulations and the collective agreement which
stipulate that a strike cannot be held without the foreseen
conciliation process, the statement said.
Given that the CSH announced a strike which does not meet required
criteria, the government considers the strike unlawful and actions
to proclaim the strike as such will be taken in line with the Labour
Act.
In keeping with Labour Act provisions on participation in an
unlawful strike, organisers and participants will face certain
consequences, the statement said. Organisers will have to pay
damages, the government's media and public relations office said in
the statement.
