The grant will be earmarked from current budget reserves in honour
of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against
Women - November 25.
Speaking about the extent of violence in families, Minister Gordana
Sobol reported that since 1997 until mid-2001, three associations
alone dealing with victims of violence registered about 15,000
calls as a consequence of abuse in the family.
Premier Ivica Racan called on government members to join in an
action in downtown Zagreb on Saturday morning to mark the
International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
The Premier announced that government funding which would
ordinarily have been used on greeting cards and Christmas gifts
this year would be donated instead to child victims of landmines.
The government will not be sending greeting cards, with the
exception of those foreseen by protocol, nor will it give Christmas
gifts, Racan said and called on all ministries to act in the same
fashion.
