ZAGREB, Oct 22 (Hina) - The non-governmental organisation "Roda Roditelji u akciji" (Stork - Parents in Action) is alarmed by the fact that the number of women taking shorter maternity leave due to reduced maternity allowances has
increased dramatically and demands that allowances during the second half-year of the child's life be urgently raised from the current 1,600 kuna to 2,500 kuna, the allowance paid in 2000.

According to data of the Croatian Health Insurance Institute, 9,448
mothers returned back to work this year as soon as their newly-borns
were six months of age, which is a 700 percent increase in
comparison to last year, and that is alarming, the association
said.
"Roda" has once again demanded that maternity allowances be
restored to the level as they were in 2000.
