NEW YORK, Nov 4 (Hina) - Several international policemen stationed
in Bosnia-Herzegovina were involved in a prostitution racket in
that country, however, the UN office for internal supervision
(OIOS) could not find any evidence of the extent of their
involvement in the white slave trade, OIOS head Dileep Nair said in
New York on Monday. #L#
"Our investigators have discovered evidence of the connection of
some UNMBIH policemen with a prostitution racket but they do not
have any evidence that they were also involved in smuggling women,"
Nair said.
He did not wish to disclose what measures have been taken against
the policemen nor from which country they came from.
The case is still in the hands of the Peace Operations Department,
he said.
An annual report by the OIOS notes details that internal
investigators had disclosed or prevented or punished extortion and
illegal handling of about 56 million dollars since July last year
until June this year.
The OIOS is now investigating measures to be taken by the UN High
Commissioner for Refugees particular the distribution of 270
million dollars for return programmes and aid for Afghanistan, Nair
said.
Since 1995 when it was set up the OIOS has disclosed extortion or
frauds valued at over 250 million dollars of UN funds and has
managed to compensate 150 million dollars.
