Picula amongst else reminded of the significance of the UN's role in
stopping the violence and armed actions at the time when Croatia was
struggling for its existence. He pointed out the UN's contribution
to resolving the political crisis in the former Yugoslavia and
returning all sections of Croatia to its constitutional-legal
order.
Picula also reminded that the UN's most successful peace operation
- UNTAES - was conducted in Croatia and in mid December UN
peacekeepers deployed to Prevlaka would be withdrawn.
The crown of the UN's successful co-operation with Croatia is
Croatia's presiding the ECOSOC this year as well as the announced
visit by UN Secretary Kofi Annan to Croatia, Picula said, adding
that Annan should visit Zagreb on November 20.
During his visit, Annan will unveil a plaque at Zagreb airport in
honour of UN peacekeepers killed in Croatia and he will sign a
stand-by arrangement which places some Croatian military
capacities at the disposal of the UN.
