Centre manager Juan Pablo Ordonez pointed to the importance such a
donation had in the promotion of knowledge and awareness about
human rights.
Ordonez also stressed the significance of the implementation of
legislation on the protection of human rights.
He said that socio-economic rights should be given the same
attention as human rights.
Speaking about the situation in Croatia, Ordonez said that
significant progress had been made in theory but that much more had
to be done in the field, particularly regarding the Romany issue.
He called on all government and non-government human rights
associations, as well as civilian and international
representatives active in Croatia to cooperate with the Centre for
Human Rights.
The UN Centre was opened in October 2000 as a joint project between
the Office of the UN High Commissioner on Human Rights and the
Croatian government.
