The delegation includes Deputy Prime Minister Zeljka Antunovic,
Health Minister Andro Vlahusic, and Deputy Education Minister Ivan
Vavra.
They took part in debates on gender equality, the struggle against
AIDS, and the use of information and communication technologies in
the development of human resources.
Senior representatives of the 54 ECOSOC members and officials of
the UN, international and non-governmental organisations
addressed the establishment of a global fund to combat AIDS,
malaria, and tuberculosis.
Croatia's Vlahusic suggested that a certain amount of tax on
cigarettes should be paid into said fund.
Later in the day, Vlahusic met World Health Organisation (WHO)
executive director David Nabarro, who said Croatia had very good
health care if the amount spent on it and the consequences of the
1990s war were taken into consideration.
Nabarro commended the public health projects Croatia was managing
within the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe.
Vlahusic appealed for WHO assistance in some programmes pertaining
to mental health and post-traumatic stress. The two officials
agreed on cooperation in healthy living programmes given that
cardiovascular disorders are the primary death cause in Croatia.
