The talks were held during a working lunch Croatia's Ambassador to
the UN Ivan Simonovic gave for representatives of the 54 ECOSOC
members and senior officials of international organisations.
Following the talks with Annan, the head of the Croatian
delegation, Deputy Prime Minister Zeljka Antunovic, said the
mission of UN military observers on the Prevlaka peninsula was
likely to be completed by the end of the year.
IMF executive director Koehler told Antunovic most indicators
confirmed Croatia was making progress with economic reforms, which
he said represented a good starting point in current negotiations
on a new Croatia-IMF stand-by arrangement.
Antunovic also held talks with the head of the Japanese delegation
at the ECOSOC conference, Shohei Imamura. The two officials said
bilateral relations were good but that cooperation could be stepped
in all areas, the economy in particular.
Imamura was interested in the returns of refugees and displaced
persons and demining in Croatia.
Croatian Deputy Education Minister Ivan Vavra held a separate
meeting with the director of UNESCO's New York office, Jones
Kyazze. Talks addressed education projects referring to civil
society and human rights, and teacher training in the application
of information and communication technologies.
