Apart from the improvement and modernisation of experts'
education, the conference also focused on the prevention of abuse
of nuclear materials and radioactive waste.
The conference, which gathered senior officials and experts from 60
IAEA member-countries, was also attended by Croatia's Deputy
Science and Technology Minister Zdenko Franic.
Franic met IAEA general director Mohamed El Baradei, with whom he
discussed the representation of Croatian experts in the IAEA and
other UN bodies.
El Baradei expressed satisfaction with the scope and quality of
cooperation between Croatia and the IAEA. He was interested in the
solution of the problem of the Croatian-Slovene nuclear power plant
Krsko and expressed hope the two countries' parliaments would
ratify the agreement on Krsko as soon as possible, contributing to
the plant's future safe operation.
The senior IAEA official was also satisfied with the fact that a
bill on the establishment of a state institute for radiological and
nuclear safety as an independent body was in parliamentary
procedure.
Franic also met El Baradei's deputy in charge of technical
cooperation, Jihui Qian, with whom he discussed cooperation
projects. He expected that the IAEA council of governors would
approve projects for which Croatia had sought financial assistance
at a session at the end of this year.
