The Union of Croatian Railway Workers and the Croatian Railways
Infrastructure Workers' Union, which gather about 3,500 of the
total of 16,000 HZ employees, organised a four-hour strike today
and ceased all maintenance jobs.
According to an estimate by the unions, about 2,000 employees are
participating in the strike.
The unions, which are dissatisfied with the draft collective
agreement, are warning that the management is violating the law on
railway traffic safety by entrusting unauthorised people with
taking care of maintenance.
Beside the retroactive application of the collective agreement,
the unions are also requesting of the management a more adequate
price for the working hour in maintenance and a 10 percent increase
in salaries because of difficult working conditions, stating that
the management should set aside 500,000 kuna per month for this.
The unions are saying that the management has distributed funds for
salaries to the detriment of non-basic HZ activities with a draft
collective agreement which majority unions initialled.
