A recent international conference entitled "Vienna Dialogue --
Solidarity Across Borders" was attended by trade unions from
Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Croatia, and a
representative if the international alliance of trade unions Union
Network International Commerce from Geneva.
Participants of the conference discussed neo-liberal trends in the
participant countries, especially those relating to the working
hours of stores and working conditions in multinational chains of
stores.
The participants analysed negative effects and methods used by
multinational chains of stores, especially METRO and BILLA/REWE.
The unions categorically denounced their unfair practice.
Trade employees in countries, candidates for the EU are being
short-changed in social and legal improvements, with the excuse
that these are conditions for joining the EU, while, at the same
time, the EU is asking of all countries to expand protection rights
for workers, because of threatening competition after the
expansion, the STH warned.
