ZAGREB, Dec 23 (Hina) - Ivo Sanader, the new prime minister of Croatia, was born in the southern Adriatic city of Split in 1953. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy in Innsbruck, Austria, where he obtained a doctorate in
1982.

From 1983 to 1987, Sanader worked as a programmes editor and later as
the acting editor-in-chief of the Logos publishing house in Split. The
next three years he spent on the editorial board of the From 1983 to

From 1987 to 1991, Sanader worked as a private business owner in
Innsbruck, and from 1991 to 1992 he was the manager of the Croatian
National Theatre in Split.
In 1990, Sanader founded a branch of the Croatian Democratic Union
(HDZ) party in the Austrian region of Tirol. He was elected an HDZ
member of the Croatian parliament in 1992.
From 1992 to 1993, Sanader served as science and technology minister.
He served twice as deputy foreign minister, from 1993 to 1995 and from
1996 to 2000.
From 1995 to 1996, Sanader performed the duties of presidential chief
of staff and secretary-general of the National Defence and Security
Council.
At parliamentary elections in 2000, Sanader was re-elected a member of
parliament and filled the post of vice-chairman of the Foreign Affairs
Committee.
At the fifth general convention of the HDZ in April 2000, Sanader was
elected president of the party and was re-elected to this post at the
7th general convention in April 2002.
Sanader published a number of papers on literary history and
criticism, politics and diplomacy. He is a member of the Croatian
Writers' Society and the Croatian PEN Centre. He speaks English,
German, Italian and French.
Sanader is married and has two daughters.
