ZAGREB, Dec 16 (Hina) - Pope John Paul II will receive the president of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and Croatia's new premier-designate, Ivo Sanader, in January 2004, the HDZ said in a statement on Tuesday.

The visit has been arranged with the Office of the Holy See
Secretary of State, the statement said.
According to announcements, Sanader should meet Italian Prime
Minister and chairman of the European Union Silvio Berlusconi this
Thursday or Friday. This will be the second meeting in the last two
months between the two officials.
According to unofficial information, the talks should address,
among other things, the process of Croatia's joining the EU.
In the next six months the EU should define its opinion about
Croatia's application for EU membership.
