ZAGREB, Dec 22 (Hina) - Vladimir Seks of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) was elected president of the Croatian parliament at an inaugural session on Monday.
ZAGREB, Dec 22 (Hina) - Vladimir Seks of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) was elected president of the Croatian parliament at an inaugural session on Monday.#L# Seks was born in the eastern city of Osijek in 1943. He graduated from the Zagreb School of Law in 1966. He worked as a law intern in the Office of the Public Prosecutor in Vinkovci. He briefly served as a Municipal Court judge and then as a deputy district prosecutor in Osijek. From 1972 to 1981 he worked as a lawyer. In 1981, Seks was sentenced to 13 months in prison for "conspiracy against the state" and was disbarred. Four years later he served seven months in jail. In 1987 he became active in international non-governmental human rights organisations. In 1989 Seks was elected vice-president of the HDZ, and has filled top positions in the party since. He has served as a member of parliament since 1990, discharging various duties. During the Homeland War, Seks held the post of president of the Crisis Staff for Eastern Croatia. From 1992 to 1994 he served as a deputy prime minister, and from April to September 1992 he performed the duties of public prosecutor. Seks wrote several books, including "Delikt misljenja" (Crime of Thought), "Ogledi o slobodi savjesti" (Writings on the Freedom of Conscience), "Zatvorska sjecanja" (Memories from Prison) and about 20 papers on law and political science.
