Congratulating newly-elected members of parliament, Tomcic recalled
that the fifth parliament was being formed on the 13th anniversary of
the so-called Christmas Constitution, whose fundamental values he said
remained unchanged despite a series of constitutional amendments.
Tomcic said he considered the rule of law to be crucial for the future
of the country, because it would enable economic recovery and a rise
in living standards as preconditions for Croatia's entry into the
European Union and NATO.
The inaugural session of the parliament was attended by numerous
political, religious and cultural figures who, together with
newly-elected MPs, observed a minute of silence in honour of all those
who had given their lives for Croatia in the 1991-1995 Homeland War.
