SPLIT SPLIT, Aug 7 (Hina) - Split police on Thursday night arrested and brought before an investigating judge a 54-year-old man, suspected of war crimes, i.e. the persecution of Croat civilians from 1991 to 1995 in the formerly
occupied Croatian region of Vrlika, and the blowing up of the Peruca dam in 1993.
SPLIT, Aug 7 (Hina) - Split police on Thursday night arrested and
brought before an investigating judge a 54-year-old man, suspected
of war crimes, i.e. the persecution of Croat civilians from 1991 to
1995 in the formerly occupied Croatian region of Vrlika, and the
blowing up of the Peruca dam in 1993. #L#
The man, a Croatian citizen, is suspected of having persecuted
Croat civilians in the wider Vrlika area as a commander of the so-
called Republika Srpska Krajina (RSK) militia and army.
Split police report it has been established that the suspect also
took part in preparing, delivering and planting several tonnes of
explosives used to blow up the Peruca dam on January 28, 1993.
On that day the RSK army drove out of the region the Kenyan battalion
of the UN protection force, which secured the dam.
The dam was damaged in the explosion, its hydroelectric plant was
destroyed, as was a bridge leading to the dam.
After the explosion, the Croatian army took over control of the dam
and nearby area.
