THE HAGUE/ZAGREB, July 9 (Hina) - Bosnian Croat Zdravko Mucic will
be released from detention after he served two thirds of his
sentence, according to a decision which the Hague-based UN war
crimes tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) announced on
Wednesday. #L#
Mucic, one of the indictees in the Celebici case, was sentenced to
nine years in jail. The former commander of the prisoner camp at
Celebici, central Bosnia-Herzegovina, was found guilty of nine
murders committed by his subordinates in the camp where Bosnian
Serbs were kept. He was also convicted of inhumane treatment of
inmates. Another two convicts in the Celebici case -- Mucic's
deputy Hazim Delic and prison guard Esad Landzo -- were sentenced to
18 and 15 years in prison.
Mucic has been in custody at the ICTY detention centre since his
arrest on 18 March in Austria.
Explaining the decision to release Mucic on parole, the ICTY's
president said the tribunal had taken into consideration Mucic's
good behaviour in the detention centre, his readiness to
reintegrate in society and his good physical and mental condition,
as well as commitment to his family and the possibility of re-
employment.
Mucic is the sixth ICTY convict to have served his sentence. The
other five are Drazen Erdemovic, Zlatko Aleksovski, Dragan
Kolundzija, Milojica Kos and Damir Dosen.
