Democratic Alliance of Vojvodina Croats (DSHV), which was held in
Subotica on Sunday, voted for replacing Bela Tonkovic as party
president. #L#
Although Tonkovic called for a boycott of the session of the highest
party body, in attendance were more than 130 deputies from all parts
of Vojvodina and Zemun, which is more than two thirds of required
votes.
Tonkovic's replacement was supported by 122 deputies, while 11
voted against.
Martin Bacic, one of the party officials who initiated today's
vote, said that in recent years Tonkovic had become an obstacle to
the unity of the Croat community in Serbia and Montenegro.
Bacic and his supporters consider Tonkovic responsible for a drop
in party popularity, the defeat in elections for the Croat National
Council, and the discontinuation of cooperation with other Croat
organisations in Vojvodina as well as with the homeland.
The process of party transformation will continue on July 20, when a
special electoral assembly, called by Tonkovic and his supporters,
will be held.
Tonkovic was DSHV president since its establishment in 1991. He is
also a vice-president of the Subotica Municipal Assembly and the
Federal Union of European Minorities.
