Speaking at a news conference, Sanader announced the HDZ's eighth
informative assembly on June 21 to focus on what had been achieved
in the past period and guidelines for the party's future
activities.
Participants in the assembly are expected to adopt amendments to
the party's statute prolonging the mandate of party bodies and
president from two to four years, said Sanader. He added that the
process of inter-party elections would begin in the autumn.
At the assembly, prominent party officials will speak about the
current situation in the country and representatives of union
federations and the Croatian Employers' Association will speak
about economic and social issues.
The assembly will be attended by 5,500 deputies.
The chairwoman of the European Parliament's committee on South-
eastern Europe, Doris Pack, and numerous representatives of
affiliated domestic and foreign political parties have been
invited.
Party membership will be called to fully mobilise so the party could
better prepare itself for elections which, according to some
announcements by the Social Democratic Party, should take place in
October. Sanader urged the government to undertake the necessary
steps as soon as possible to make it possible for Croatian emigrants
to vote in Croatian embassies and consulates.
Commenting on Sunday's stoning of the Croatian Embassy and the
burning of the Croatian flag in Belgrade, Sanader said this was an
unacceptable and uncivilised act, however, it did not excuse
Croatian fans and their inappropriate behaviour during the
European water polo championship finals in Kranj, Slovenia.
