The heads of state are to consider prospects of the region and a role
of the current and future EU members in offering assistance to
central Europe in accomplishing its goals in plans about a united
Europe.
Earlier this month Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said that
Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia-Montenegro might sign a
joint declaration on principles on the return of refugees, on the
margins of the Salzburg summit. Ahead of the start of the Salzburg
two-day event, Zagreb, Sarajevo and Belgrade were still
harmonising their views on the final text of the declaration, and
according to unofficial sources, the declaration will not be signed
at this summit. The tripartite meeting of the heads of state of the
said countries, however, is to be held in Salzburg.
The first summit of central European states took place in the Czech
Republic in 1994 when the event pooled presidents of seven
countries -- the Czech Republic, Hungary, Austria, Germany,
Poland, Slovenia and Slovakia. Croatia joined in as the 12th member
at the CE summit in Hungary in 2000.
