Austrian Foreign Minister Benita Ferrero-Waldner in Zagreb on
Wednesday, the President's Office said in a statement. #L#
There are no open issues in the two countries' relations which are
developing continually, Mesic said at the meeting. Both officials
agreed about Croatia's obligation to fully cooperate with the
International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY)
in The Hague.
Austria helped Croatia when the country was struggling for
independence and today is one of the countries which most strongly
support Croatia's candidacy for membership in the European Union,
the statement said.
The Austrian official welcomed President Mesic's proposal that he
and the leaders of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia and Montenegro
sign a declaration defining the principles of refugee return. She
voiced satisfaction with the fact that the declaration would most
probably be signed in Salzburg during a summit of the presidents of
Central European countries.
Mesic warned the Austrian official about negative implications of
the support which was being given in some European countries,
including Austria, to certain opposition parties in Croatia, with
the leaders of those parties being given different messages than
those that were given to the Croatian government.
President Mesic also warned about the conduct of some domestic
media, which he said were financed with foreign capital and were
systematically spreading lies about the current authorities under
the pretext of criticism, the statement said.
