A senior official of the institution, Slavko Goldstein, said the
parliament was asked to help organise the commemoration as it was
providing similar assistance when the Bleiburg victims were
commemorated.
Asked why this year's commemoration to the Jasenovac victims was
held on the same day as the commemoration of the Bleiburg victims,
Goldstein said the ceremony at Jasenovac could not have been
organised earlier as the last two Sundays in April were Catholic and
Orthodox Easter.
"One should not look for any symbolism or similarity in the fact
that both commemorations are held on the same day," Goldstein
said.
However, he pointed out that Croatian Television would make a major
mistake if it covered the mass at Bleiburg live and ignored the
Jasenovac event.
Goldstein said he expected President Stjepan Mesic to attend the
commemoration as he had promised last year, when the event was held
under the auspices of the government.
The commemoration near the "Stone Flower" monument at Jasenovac is
held to mark 22 April 1945, when 600 inmates broke out of the camp,
but only 96 managed to escape.
