Of the 1,900 employed, 1,300 were employed through a self-
employment programme. This year, another 1,500-2,000 demobilised
soldiers could find employment, for which the government has
earmarked 40 million kuna, Pancic said. He regretted the fact that
war veterans in Slavonia and Baranja had the lowest employment rate
in the past four to five years and so last year only 340 veterans
found jobs.
Eighty percent of a total of 32,000 unemployed war veterans have not
completed secondary education and need to complete it and undergo
training or re-training, Pancic said. He stated that the worst way
to resolve unemployment among this population was to send them into
retirement, particularly those suffering from PTSS, and added that
estimates about 10,000 PTSS cases were exaggerated.
The minister reiterated that it was his personal decision to cancel
state funding for the association of disabled war veterans (HVIDR)
"because its leadership does not recognise Croatia's
constitutional order". He added that the ministry fully supported
his decision.
