SINJ, March 23 (Hina) - A vice-president of the Social Democratic
Party and the Croatian parliament, Mato Arlovic, has described as
inappropriate reactions by leaders and war veterans' associations
from the Cetina region and Sinj's Alka Knights Society to the trial
of General Mirko Norac. #L#
Addressing reporters during a visit to the party's branch in Sinj on
Sunday, Arlovic said he appreciated Norac's positive role in the
war and hoped the court would establish if his engagement contained
criminal elements and pass and just and law-based verdict.
"The defence of the accused can appeal to the verdict regardless of
its character, but using any trial, including this one, for
political purposes isn't good for," he said.
The Alka Knights Society last week issued a statement saying it was
"confident that the Croatian judiciary - despite pressures at home
and from abroad - will pass an acquitting, just and morally
liberating verdict in this rigged political trial". Members of the
society also said they would travel to Rijeka on Monday, when
Norac's verdict is to be proclaimed.
