PARLIAMENT: CROATIA NEEDS PERMANENT ELECTORAL MODEL

ZAGREB, March 12 (Hina) - Croatian needs a permanent and stable electoral model so that each parliamentary election is not held according to a different model. The country must create a model which will give stronger influence to all voters, it was said at a parliament sitting on Wednesday at which electoral bills moved by the Democratic Centre (DC), the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS), the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Istrian Democratic Assebmly/Liberal Party (IDS/LS) were presented.

The country must create a model which will give stronger influence to all voters, it was said at a parliament sitting on Wednesday at which electoral bills moved by the Democratic Centre (DC), the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS), the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Istrian Democratic Assebmly/Liberal Party (IDS/LS) were presented. #L# Over the last several years, elections were always held according to a different model, the opinion that those in power can change the electoral law prevailed and this must be changed, Vesna Skare Ozbolt of the DC said. She said Croatia needed to work on a permanent electoral model and that a referendum on the issue should be held. The HSS and the SDP advocated a stronger impact of the individual voter and the electorate on the parliamentary system. Today's parliament sitting should clear doubts whether Croatia would attend the next election according to the electoral model or an amended version of the existing one. The ruling colaition failed to harmonise the standpoints on a joint electoral bill. The constitutional deadline for the adoption of a new electoral law expires in early April. (hina)it sb
