Simonovic is taking part in the 47th session of the UN's Commission
for the Status of Women in UN Headquarters in New York, where she
presented two new laws by which Croatia is endeavouring to
strengthen the status of women and to prevent violence against
women.
"The basic aim of the law on gender equality is to increase
protection against sexual discrimination and to guarantee equal
opportunities for men and women in the political and social scene,
in education and other areas, Simonovic said.
She also told the Commission that the Croatian parliament was
discussing a law concerning prevention of violence in the family.
Simonovic said that apart from adopting legislative regulations to
strengthen the position of women, concrete steps were being taken
to achieve this aim in society.
