Parliament vice president Baltazar Jalsovec said cigarette
addiction was one of the most common causes of diseases and death in
Croatia.
On behalf of the Croatian Social Liberal Party (HSLS), Josko
Kontic, requested that government representatives, led by Premier
Ivica Racan, come to parliament during the day to inform MPs and the
public of, as he said, latest developments which caused a fall in
security standards in Croatia.
He reminded of a recent bomb that was planted under a car belonging
to Croatia's biggest publisher Ninoslav Pavic, and presented data
from a public opinion poll about citizens' concern for their own
safety.
Kontic warned that the head of the office for the prevention of
crime and corruption (USKOK), Zeljko Zganjer, told the Slobodna
Dalmacija daily yesterday that criminals had their own people in
the judiciary, police and security services.
He therefore demanded of the premier, the defence minister, the
interior minister and the head of the government's security
services' coordinating body to attend today's sitting and inform
MPs of the security situation. He also called on the USKOK head to
submit a report on the matter.
Parliament continued its session with a joint debate on a bill
submitted by the government and the Croatian Party of Rights
regarding the prevention of conflicts of interest in performing
public duties.
