ZAGREB, Feb 22 (Hina) - The Liberal Party (LS) President told
members of the party's national committee that "the ascending line
of the LS, which is being expected by many and which causes
nervousness in others, should be confirmed and extended." #L#
"We must be aware that at the moment the Croatian public is
expecting much of the LS and even more than the party can offer. But
it is up to us to show how we are ready to do everything to fulfil
expectations, and to do more than that," Ivo Banac said on Saturday
during the LS national committee's founding session in Zagreb.
He assessed that many expectations from reforms, promised in 2000,
had not been met, and he did not believe that the "mastodons" of
ruling coalition would speed their pace at the last stage of their
term-of-office.
According to Banac, the strongest opposition party - the Croatian
Democratic Union (HDZ) -could not become the prime mover of
reforms.
"Croatia, which has been disappointed twice, is seeking an exit and
we offer it," Banac told his party's senior officials.
In this context he added that party members had to fulfil a few
conditions: they should work, be open and get right down to
business.
