This committee agreed that a provision on the protection of
underrepresented gender in employment should not be erased.
According to an assistant Labour Minister, Vera Babic, the proposed
changes to the said law did not alter the document dramatically and
therefore there was no point for a preceding discussion.
She announced changes in the pension and health care system and
insurance in case of unemployment, together with the amendments to
the Labour Act.
A representative of the Liberal Party (LS), Tibor Santo, said the
changes to the said law should be adopted only after social partners
harmonised their views on the matter, and that sufficient time
should be ensured for negotiations.
Zlatko Canjuga of the Croatian Independent Democrats (HND)
labelled the changes as a bureaucratic move until the elaboration
of a strategy for the country's economic development.
Vice-chairwoman of the women's chapter of the Federation of the
Independent Trade Unions of Croatia (SSSH), Jasna Petrovic,
advocated a more flexible labour market, but with assurances for
enhanced social security and better implementation of programmes
creating new jobs.
The draft amendments to the Labour Act were endorsed only by the
association of business women, the so-called KRUG (Circle).
The government's social partnership office on Monday announced the
continuation of negotiations between government officials,
unionists and employers on contentious changes for tomorrow.
