ZAGREB, Feb 24 (Hina) - Liberal Party (LS) leader Ivo Banac said on
Monday the government's decision on allowing US forces to use
Croatian territory in a possible war against Iraq would be
sufficient and the parliament was not required to decide about it
for the time being. #L#
"There are some aspects for which only the Sabor is competent, and
there are others which can be decided by the government. The LS
believes that at the moment there is no need for the parliament to
make any decisions," Banac told reporters in Zagreb when asked if
the ruling coalition yesterday discussed the parliament's deciding
about the possible presence of foreign military troops in Croatia.
Banac confirmed that the coalition had discussed the US request
that Croatia allow the use of its air space and airports, but could
not comment on any details before Wednesday as the coalition had not
adopted any final solutions and was waiting for the results of some
additional consultations.
Banac said the LS did not see any reason for an attack on Iraq, even
more so if it would be launched without the consent of the United
Nations. "The regime of Saddam Hussein, which we deplore, is under
control and it would be good to impose on it additional demands,
especially with regard to human rights, which are systematically
violated," Banac said.
Asked whether the government would oppose a military intervention
as Prime Minister Ivica Racan yesterday stated that the coalition
had adopted a unanimous stand, Banac declined to comment, only
saying the unanimity was conditional on some additional
information.
