Some 30 associations, which are members of the peace initiative
"Enough of Wars", announced peaceful anti-war demonstrations to
take place on Saturday in Zagreb, Osijek, Pula, Split, Zadar,
Vukovar and Sibenik.
The central anti-war event will be organised at 11 am in Zagreb's
Ban Jelacic Square. Several thousand citizens are expected to
attend the rally.
"We will initiate the signing of a petition requesting the Croatian
government to withdraw its signature from a statement of the
Vilnius Group which approves an attack by the United States on Iraq
and be neutral in the event it is launched," said Hrvoje Juric, one
of the organisers of the protest.
Juric said the purpose of the rally was not to promote an anti-
American policy, but exclusively to protest against war and warn
about the "bad policy" of the US government. Juric recalled that
most anti-war campaigns were held in the United States.
