ZAGREB, Feb 7 (Hina) - Representatives of Croatia's five union
federations and the major unions outside them signed an agreement

to the Labour Act. #L#
The leaders of all major unions committed themselves to oppose a
bill of amendments the government has forwarded into parliament
through the all-union assembly, the referendum, and protests,
including a general strike.
The changes drastically reduce workers' rights, particularly
through lower severance pays, shorter notice periods, the equation
of temporary and permanent employment, and the increase in the
number of workers that small employers may employ and subsequently
fire without explanation, the unions say.
The all-union assembly should be held within two weeks, depending
on when parliament will debate the bill. Around noon that day union
envoys will hold a protest rally in front of parliament.
The unions will hold a referendum about a general strike among their
members, and also collect signatures for a referendum at which
citizens would say what they think about the directions Croatia's
economic and social policies are taking.
