The unions demand that the average salary for general practitioners
amount to two average salaries in Croatia or 7,000 kuna (slightly
under 1,000 euros), while specialists should be paid two and a half
average salaries or around 9,000 kuna (1,200 euros).
Deputy Prime Minister Goran Granic recently rejected the demands as
unrealistic, stating that the government was prepared to discuss a
bonus for work in special conditions, to amount to 6-22% of doctors'
regular salaries. The government was also prepared to give doctors
with exceptionally good performance salaries increased by 25%,
while those who work below standard would receive 75% of their
regular salary, Granic said.
According to the union data, an intern receives a salary of 4,932
kuna (657 euros) for a 40-hour week.
Salaries are defined according to qualifications and the
complexity of work in medical institutions. A head doctor working
in primary health care receives a salary of 5,278 kuna (703 euros)
while a specialist working in a hospital receives 5,332 kuna (710
euros). The highest salary is earned by a head doctor with a Ph.D. -
6,265 kuna (835 euros).
The salaries are increased by 0.5 percent for each year of service
while doctors employed in hospitals (not all) receive a supplement
of six percent on their basic salary and bonuses for duty and stand-
by hours.
