ZAGREB, Jan 3 (Hina) - The Croatian Teachers Union will organise a
five-day strike in primary schools on January 13 because the
government has disregarded non-teaching staff in the distribution
of additional funds for the salaries of primary school employees.

The strike will be organised in 760 primary schools during the first
week of the second half of the school year, on Monday, January 13,
and will last until Friday, January 17, union leader Dalimir Kuba
said.
Speaking at a news conference, Kuba called on the government to
start negotiations on union demands for more funds and their fair
distribution in the next ten days.
The union demands that primary schools be allocated another 80
million kuna from the Education and Sports Ministry budget since
the 130 million kuna the ministry has allocated for teachers'
salaries covers only a 4.85% increase in gross salaries in 2003.
The union claims that by adopting a decision on the allocation of
budgetary funds the government privileged some union members, thus
interfering in the internal organisation of unions and violating
regulations of the International Labour Organisation.
The Independent Union of Secondary School Employees, the largest
such union, has recently stated that it will join in the strike. The
union will make a formal decision on the matter next Tuesday, Kuna
said.
