Beslic, who was elected for a four-year-term, is the first mayor of Mostar after the war who will not have his deputy, under the recently changed statute of the city, with changes imposed by the High Representative to Bosnia, Paddy Ashdown.
Under the previous statute, representatives of the Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) and Croat people rotated in the offices of Mostar Mayor and Deputy Mayor every year.
Beslic said today that he would do his best to help Mostar remain Herzegovina's economic, cultural and sports centre. He also said that he would launch a campaign aimed at adding the old city of Mostar to UNESCO's list of cultural heritage sites.
Beslic became the mayor of Mostar while the city council would be chaired by a representative of the Bosniak people. These elections were the result of an agreement which the top leaders of HDZ BiH and the (Bosniak) Party of Democratic Action (SDA) recently reached on the matter.
